Test & Tag Regulations Tasmania

Test & Tag Regulations Tasmania

When it comes to Test and Tag requirements in Tasmania, the rules follow the national AS/NZS 3760:2022 Standard - just like the rest of Australia. Whether you’re working in Hobart, Launceston, or regional TAS, the key regulations and safety obligations remain the same.

But if you’re working in high-risk environments like construction, mining or demolition, there are a few extra things to know - especially around test and tag colours and how often electrical equipment needs to be retested.

Let’s break down the key Test and Tag Regulations in Tasmania so you know exactly what’s required.

Do I Need a Test & Tag Licence in Tasmania?

Unlike Queensland, there is no additional licence required to perform test and tag in Tasmania. You do not need to be an electrician either, but you do need to be deemed a ‘Competent Person’ under AS/NZS 3760:2022.

To meet this requirement, you’ll need to complete a Nationally Recognised Test and Tag Course through a Registered Training Organisation (RTO). Once you’ve completed the course, you’ll be qualified to test and tag portable appliances either for yourself or others.

Our Online Test & Tag course is fully accredited across Tasmania - ideal for those who can't access in-person training.

AS/NZS 3760 & 3012 Standards (Tasmania)

In Tasmania, you must test and tag in accordance with the AS/NZS 3760:2022 Standard for most general workplace environments. If you work in construction, demolition, or similar high-risk industries, you’ll also need to follow the AS/NZS 3012 Standard - which outlines stricter testing intervals and colour coding.

The 3760 standard covers how portable electrical appliances must be inspected and tested, while 3012 outlines site-specific requirements for hazardous industries.

The current version of the Test and Tag Standard was last updated in 2022, replacing the older 2010 edition. If you're testing and tagging in Tasmania, you must ensure you're working to the latest version.

Test and Tag Tag Colours Tasmania

If you're working in construction, mining or demolition in Tasmania, you're required to follow the test tag colour rotation as outlined in AS/NZS 3012. This system uses a different coloured test tags each quarter to show when the appliance was tested.

The tag colour schedule is as follows:

  • Red – December to February
  • Green – March to May
  • Blue – June to August
  • Yellow – September to November

If you work in mining or construction sites, check out our in-depth guides these environments, read our full guide on test and tag in construction and test and tag in mining.

This ensures that anyone on-site can clearly see whether an item is current, due for re-testing, or out of compliance.

For industries outside of construction or demolition (e.g. offices, retail, workshops), you're not legally required to use specific coloured test and tag labels, but many businesses still choose to follow the same system for internal safety and consistency.

Test and Tag Intervals Tasmania

How often equipment needs to be tested depends on the environment it’s used in. Below are the general testing intervals recommended by the AS/NZS 3760:2022 Standard:

  • Construction, Mining & Demolition: every 3 months
  • Factories, Warehouses & Workshops: every 6 months
  • Environments with flexing cables or high risk of damage: every 12 months
  • Low-risk environments (no flexing cords): every 5 years

Keep in mind - these are minimum guidelines. Your employer, site manager, or OHS policy may enforce shorter intervals based on risk assessment or insurance requirements.

Who Oversees Test and Tag in Tasmania?

Workplace safety in Tasmania is regulated by WorkSafe Tasmania, the state's governing body for electrical and workplace safety. They oversee electrical safety compliance across the state and recognise the AS/NZS 3760:2022 Standard as the legal framework for Test and Tag practices.

They may conduct site inspections, safety audits, and issue penalties if unsafe equipment is found - especially on worksites where testing and tagging is mandatory.
