How to Test & Tag an Extension Lead
Testing and tagging an extension lead is one of the simpler tests to conduct. You’ll find that all appliance testers that conform to Australian Standards AS/NZS 3760 will have this test available, and is usually completed by the push of a button.
Similarly to other items, the visual inspection is most important part and an area where defects are most likely to be found.
Please remember:
- Perform a thorough visual inspection – checking the pins, modifications, abrasions, twists etc.
- Tests which are performed include Earth Continuity, Insulation Resistance and Polarity.
- Domestic leads can’t be taken onto construction sites – minimum requirement is 1.0mm² (see Table 1 below).
- People working in construction should be checking the cross-sectional area on the cable to be compliant.

Image: Maximum length for a lead that is 1.0mm is 25 meters. Relates to people working primarily in construction.
